Song Writing

There has been an off and on debate on the originality of several established song writers recently.

I was very excited about the first song I wrote. But, by the time I got home on my bike I realized what I had done was write the Brian Wilson's/Gary Usher's song "409" with different lyrics. Its not unusual to start off writing parodies and "sounds a like" songs to learn the craft, but you can't mistake those efforts with a significant achievement.

As you work on your craft (And, it is a craft; not magic that makes it work for you.), you begin to figure out not just music theory and poetry, but what appeals to others as it is "mass" communication.

Gradually, you'll begin to notice the work of other composers and players. For example John Coltrane and Jimi Hendrix both blew their share of minds. I remember listening to Dave Brubeck the first time. Brubeck loved odd time signatures in both his original and re-arranged recordings. One thing I learned is how a good song could be improved and that a good song can be changed in any number of ways without being ruined.

At this point, composer should consider taking up a second or third instrument. Not only will this make you more apt to gain work as a player, but it will force you to look at music differently. If you don't want to learn a new instrument, perhaps buying instructional DVDs on other instruments, amps, and recording techniques would be good.

Hopefully, at some point you learn to make things unique. For example, McCartney and Harrison used to talk about adding "jazz chords" (9 chords; diminished chords) to convey additional emotion and add distinction to a song. For example, 7 chords tend to imply movement in the Western mind so they can create a dynamic tension. Two things the Beatles did a lot was mix common chord structures and change time signatures.

At this stage in your development, it would also be good to investigate other art forms, the artists themselves, and the stories behind their works.

To really be successful, the creative person must be able to go to that odd place where creative people work. This realm of the mind is one of both extreme concentration and child like wonder where rules are suspended and brainstorming can run wild.

When you combine your skills with your disciplined mind, you should find yourself having a level of songwriting craft that makes it look easy to others. However, don't feel bad if you can't write "Help" in ten minutes, because someone said you need another song. One practice technique is to write a song a day while in different frames of mind.

At this point, song writers usually have enough skill to write in the style of other song writers or re-write the songs of others to the point where most can not tell. (You know, take a sad song and make it better.) Some of the clever song writers will take elements from different sources, such as a century's old poem and combine it with a traditional melody.

To the causal listener, these types of songs sound original, but other musicians can usually figure out the influences even it it is in a different key or time signature. Hopefully, you have a fellow musician with enough knowledge that they can determine if what you have is an original song or if other elements of the composition have to be changed or if the Producer can just mask the run of the mill tune with a wall of sound.

"The Greats" typically make a leap to another level where even their peers are stunned by what they do next. Revolver was quite brilliant and underrated, but Sgt Pepper was so stunning in composition, arrangement, sound, and appearance that it set things differently from that point forward.

As you get older, the genius moments occur less often, because of the nature of the mind. Competition for your time and attention is normal as you age. Sadly, so is the decrease in faculties. Later, the memory starts to fade. (Hopefully, your Producer will remember that Randy Newman song if you don't.) It doesn't help that the entertainment industry is fast paced and the world is high on content.

Successful well known song writers have a pressure to deliver product that can frustrate and delude their work.

New technology is a big driver in all types of innovation, so consider if each innovation is right for you.

Another thing that I've found helpful for promoting creativity is getting a life coach to help me work through problems or to help push me into exploring other aspects of my personality.

Open letter mostly to the Transgendered

If you recall, I volunteer as a community organizer with in the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community. I wrote this letter to an upset transgender (TG) person who essentially wants to know what do do about discrimination as she is tired of waiting to be equal:

When the Democrats had control of the entire government they failed to take the opportunity to guarantee TGs equal access to housing and prevent job discrimination.

These two inexpensive things would have allowed TGs to have better lives and to integrate with others thus showing they aren't that different after all. However, the Democrats aren't going to fall on their sword for three tens of a percent of the population which is basically broke.

Sadly, the GLBT movement is generally led by people with no feel for the political process. The best they seem to be able to do is try and copy the black movement, which suffered from different forms of prejudice, and, on occasion, quote Marxist philosophy which no one takes seriously anymore. In turn, political operatives use GLBTs for fund raising and action, but they have no intention of helping them. I call it the "long con." I have taken several runs at these people, but they live in their own world which is funded by donations by often poor TGs. (Last study I read said the disabled were the number one economically disadvantaged group, followed by TGs, and then gays...)

Most people are fixated on unemployment (It would have been better to help GLBTs in "good" times.), which is understandable, plus they do not see GLBTs as part of the American fabric. (In fact, most people think they don't know any TGs...part of why coming out is important.) The tools tried so far don't address these problems. In fact, I think the only think an outsider that has helped is Oprah who got regular folks talking.

One of the problems with the parades is the supposedly sympathetic media picks out the weirdest people to show on TV undermining the whole process. Though gays support TGs and bisexuals more than straights, it might not be as by as much as you might think. When you march in a gay pride parade, you're marching for gay rights; not TG rights. Often, viewers do not understand the difference anyway. When I brought up the problem with parades and how they should be re-focused or discontinued, I get told I don't understand its "part of the culture." Yeah, so are show tunes, but they haven't helped either.

The way the polls have moved, I think TGs (and bisexuals) would be better going it alone. To a certain extent, this has happened. I was surprised with how many well know singers have come out as bi in the last year. (I've also been somewhat surprised by the non-reaction to Rhianna and Britney singing about leather sex and similar adverts.)

TGs can help themselves a lot by not being fixated on their situation and not being so narcissistic, because re-enforcing the stereotypes.

Sadly, things like this amount to slow and steady progress, though you have to be prepared to make your move if you see an opening.

Which Instruments?

When I was a kid, most of us were lucky to have a beginner guitar. In my case, I wore out the original bridge and two sets of tuning keys on mine before I got a professional instrument.

But, several have asked me how many instruments do you need?

Professionals often have several guitars they are comfortable to use as backup and to address the needs of the different styles of music they play. For example, a "classic rock" player might have two Gibson Les Pauls and one Fender Stratocaster along with an acoustic guitar or two.

If you're a hobbyist or play in a "tribute" band, perhaps what you need is an instrument, amps, and effects similar to your idol or just ones that captures your fancy. Just remember, that buying an instrument like your idol won't automatically make you sound like him. Beyond talent and playing technique, I find other things including body mass can influence your sound.

If you're a collector, then you need to buy what you like of course, but be mindful of which instruments are likely to gain in value over the time you plan to own them. I suspect that most of the instruments popular with "baby boomers" are already about maxed out in value. I'd target a Jackson Randy Rhodes and early Paul Reed Smith guitars. Just remember, they all need to be maintained, kept in a controlled and secure environment, and played.

If you're an artist yourself, it important to be hip to the classic tools of the trade as well as the latest things, but you might find that a mixture of products best addresses your needs as your goal is to sound like you and not the Rolling Stones. One thing I've found is that experienced players tend to look for certain things in "their sound", so they often sound "like themselves" even on instruments that don't belong to them and could be of marginal quality.

Instrument Stomp Box Review

What are the key stomp boxes to own? Not only does this depend on your guitar(s) and amp(s) combination, but your style and manner of playing. Yet, there seems to be some items that last.

I started playing before you could buy a compressor in a pedal left alone an optical model. However, for many guitar and bass players think it is the most useful tool you can have. To me, the Robert Keely Compressor, which seems to be an update of Ross, is the only one worth buying, but you might also want to check out Demeter or Visual Sound. The Joe Meek model looks very interesting. Some old units squeeze the sound so much that it colors the sound which can be fun.

Old school electric bass players might want to check out enhancers such as the BBE, or Aphex. I thought the Aphex was hard on batteries and less modern sounding.

They can be temperamental, but part of the fun, a geranium 60's Fuzz Face is helpful. Silicon Fuzz Faces are more stable, but brighter and heard on many classic rock albums. Many like the old green Maxton/Ibanez 808/7 overdrives. Keely makes a version of both of these if you use them a lot. A Bixonic Expardora should have a good version of the Fuzz Face and acceptable version of the 808 if you flip the switches right. Besides, the Bixonic is a work of visual art and how can I pass up the opportunity to own something with "bi" in the title?

Early hard rock often featured a Treble Booster. Good luck finding one of those, but several builders make copies. Be sure to get one with a tone control or a switch you can flip. Divided by 13's unit has different profiles from which you can select.

Frantone Cream tone pedal in pink with a Fluff control. Again, how could I pass that up? Arteffect has a killer David Gilmour era recreation I love.

Later, some guitarists, like Randy Rhodes, started using the "script logo" MXR Distortion +. For a while, the new ones didn't sound too good, but the one I bought last year is good.

My wild card for semi-clean tones, for Tom Sholtz, some EVH, and otherwise, is a Takky distortion. Its a high end Japanese boutique thing. I got it from Mesa Engineering. Often, if I'm not sure if I will need a pedal, this is the one I will take along. Possibly even a better all around, especially for single coil guitar players, is an overdrive called the Suhr Shiba. It has a mode switch and it can be controlled remotely by your guitar tech if you have one.

Many older players like Digital Music's Sparkle Drive, which allows you to blend clean and overdrive tones, or the Full Drive 2.

Digital Music also makes a version of the Jordan fuzz tone called a SuperFuzz. It can be too wild, but sometimes I use it for rougher Boston tones coming from Barry's Dirty Finger pickup equipped Gibson SG. One of the guys in the band had one of these guitars and its very evil.

I've been known to set up a Mu-tron on a dark setting and play side. It is an un-worldly sound as if George Harrison joined Sabbath.

I also like the Red Witch pedal.

Back when Ed came out, it was hard to replicate his tone. One inexpensive and acceptable metal solution is to take several pedals set at a moderate level and hook them together. I showed a this to a kid at Sam Ash using varies models of Digitechs. He said, "Wow!" The salesman walked over and said, "How the fuck are you doing that?" How do you think we did before modern amps?

Many of the players in my age group built their sound seemingly around one brand of pedals. For example, I'd guess Ed liked MXR and Slash like Maxton. I think Slash even used a Maxton EQ for overdrive. If you can figure this out, then it could be a real help at nailing the tone of certain players.

I don't have any metal guitars, so the Digitech Metal pedal is helpful.

At the risk of sounding like I went over the cliffs of Dover, the appropriate battery is important in these effects, because that's what they were designed around in their era. Instead of the old red EverReady batteries, you might try a lithium 9 volt instead as they seem slightly hot and last much longer. My understanding is there is a version of these in a smaller plastic case that you have to order. Meanwhile, get them at Lowe's.

Some overseas have complained it is too hard to get boutique guitar pedals. Well, if you live in Asia you might look into Takky or Moon. I just got a copy of an Orange Treble and Bass Boost pedal from guys called Arteffect in Israel.

What's In with the In Crowd

The Film Found in the Woods

Back in high school, we found boxes of movie film in a wooded park. We mentioned it later at lunch and I joked it might be a porno movie. Someone else thought it might be creatures from the deep.

After school, some of the boys that lived near by found and retrieved the film. As it worked out, the parents of one of the boys were gong to be away that Friday night.

Another said, "Great, my folks have a movie projector."

No, I didn't get an invite to the first F* Film Festival.

I waited in anticipation for Monday morning to find out what happened. Would the mysterious film be blank, ruined, a family picnic, an old horror classic, porno, JFK, or space aliens? It turned out to be porno. But, just not any porno.

I still don't know what was in the film, because the guys that watched it refused to talk about it. No bragging? No story telling? No one tells the secrets of Porn Club?

By the end of the school day, the rumor was several of the guys got sick watching it.

I asked around, "What could be so bad in this film?"

The Beatles Carnival of Light

McCartney said most of the Beatles' material has been released. He added the unfinished post-Beatle Lennon songs were too poor in audio quality to fix with the tools available before Harrison died or that Yoko would not agree to let them use them.
He said one Beatle cut remains unreleased and it is called Carnival of Light. It is similar to the electronic piece Revolution #9 that many think simulates an LSD trip.

Like #9, I suspect Carnival of Light features tape loops, backwards tapes, and tracks played on an early analog sampler called a Mellotron the use of which Paul pioneered. (This keyboard was famously used on the Elton John's song Daniel.)

McCartney said Harrison did not feel like the track merited release. But, I suspect for legal reasons the track will come out ten years after the Love album.

I once made a parody of Revolution #9. I suggest you try making something similar as I did learn a lot about editing, composition, textures, and audio manipulation.

In fact, I ended up manipulating myself. One piece of mine used heavily edited versions of other's compositions. Much later, I realized this piece was about my desire to perform fellatio. Not only was fellatio rare then, but I thought I just liked girls!

Is the Septum Piercing for You?

A trend I noticed looking through European press materials and hair cut sites was the rise of the septum piercing. Traditionally, only male "bulls" got them, but things have changed.

One aspect leading to this change is the wider variety of types, materials, and colors that are available. One example is the ring with twin flying butterfly screw heads. No bull would wear anything so pretty. However, many are just wearing the piercing retainer which has its own look much like sensors projecting from your nose. Plus, you can hide it at work!

I noticed some young and pretty butches are getting them to set themselves apart.

However, an increasing number of nubile submissives are getting. Yikes, often teamed with a shaved head look (virgin lesbian coming out look?) or some kind of radical bob or bowl hair cut combination.

Me and the darn Record Business

I'd like to think I was a pioneer in what is now called "do it yourself" recording. One thing I still regret is not having better microphones. Perhaps, some of the others should have chipped in for some.

Even so, I'm pretty sure a bootleg of our recordings, some from high school, were sent to a well known artist. Until about 1975, the "year it became the music business", this was not a bad strategy to get a shot at a deal if you didn't live in N.Y.C. or L.A., so the person probably meant well. However, as lawsuits piled up, the record companies became increasingly leery of unsolicited material. And, most tapes were thrown away unopened not getting "past the secretary's desk".

In addition, the artist in question was in the process of changing labels. So, I figure our tape got put in a box and sent to the new label and then ended up on a mix tape as "new things to try and listen to get ideas."

Tim, my self-appointed manager who never got me a job, called late one night and told me to drive to the local chain record store and head shop.

"I'll hold the store open until 11:30. You have to come down here and get his new record, (because) he sounds more like you than you do."

After I explained to Mom why I had to put my clothes back on and go buy a record "in the middle of the night", I went and got it. I sat there and listened in amazement. I was a good record. It was probably the best record the artist in question had put out in years. But, Tim was right about the tracks.

Over the years, my amazement would turn into frustration as I heard other artists, often on that label, that had similar songs to ours. A few would tell guitar magazines, "Yeah, we asked and listened to the famous mix tape." In all fairness, this tape was known to include world music and Latin rock as well.

(The other day in the grocery, I was forced to listen to a song of which I threw part of away, only to listen to the singer scat sing one of Tony's songs over mine on the "play out" (the part where a song fads out at the end). Oh, it was really too much and I was barely able to contain my anger while checking out.)

Later, Tim calls me up and says, "I have set up a meeting for you tomorrow with a guy from Electra."

The meeting was to be at the record store. Tim assured me this was not like the meeting with IRS Records where they just wanted me to call in requests for the Police and the Go-Gos like a McGuffey Lane groupie, I had dated a few times.

"Listen, I'm not going to sign you", the guy from Electra said.

"But, you've never listened to any of my music."

"I don't need to hear your music. You are nothing, but (a singer-songwriter from one state over) with a tie."

I guess he never thought of pitching me to the college crowd. As I recall, the artist in question was on RCA not Electra so I still don't understand why it was a problem.

Tim didn't make this meeting.

Later, he asked me to attend the first concert of a local group, because he wanted my "opinion, because he was thinking of managing them." That group turned out to be Guided By Voices, but I don't know if Tim ever managed Bob.

Tim later said, "(I heard you got a job), how am I going to represent you if you work there?"

My employer was not rated "politically correct" by show business.

"Where else would you want me to work? I have to work somewhere, (because) I've run out of money.

Tim and I discussed another local artist who had made the trip to L.A. The rumor was he was told he sounded too much like Bruce Springsteen. He opened a local record store which was bought out by a chain and then closed this summer.

Do coincidences happen in the writing of songs and guitar technique? Sure, I can think of several including me and two other artists. Let's face it, we all share many of the same influences, the same news cycle, and, often, the same society. But, as I get older and considering what I do for a living, my tolerance for coincidences has really dropped over the years.

I have a friend at work who played in several funk bands. His stories are more typical where the producer runs off with the songs of others.

At least none of my songs are used to sell cars and tires.

And, I never "lost" my name to a record label by signing the wrong paper.

Don't let these things happen to you!

One band that was unrelated to all this did mention me in their liner notes. Not necessary, but amusing.

On a humorous note, I got contacted by a guy over the Internet to say he wanted to be paid "for all the T-Shirts you guys had me make up."

I told him, "I didn't order those T-Shirts. I doubt you will get paid as that (northern California punk) band broke up. Oh, one more thing, if you DO see them again, tell them to quit using my name."

Another time, these guys got robbed while unloading their van. I heard about in Vintage Guitar magazine or something and sent them a phase pedal they used all the time, but I didn't. It turned out it was not the band I knew, but another band. There are like 15 bands in the U.S. and Canada that use that name! I told him it was OK to keep the pedal, but "you might want to think about using another name."

Let's talk sweet satan

Do artists really do a deal with the devil? Oh, you've heard the legends about the occult and castles. Perhaps, but I suspect like most things its a bit more pedestrian.

From Crowley, you at very least get the idea of "do what you will" or "do your own thing."

The proponents of this idea range from Ozzie Osborn, to Jimmy Page, and John Phillips of the Mommas and the Poppas. (He also wanted you to "not work as hard as you play" and "go where you want to go; do what you want to do." I bet you never thought of him as a decadent.)

And, on the surface, the it all seems harmless and even appealing. As you get older you realize that not everyone can do whatever they want at just anytime, because each of us have to take responsibility. Obviously, you can't have Sid Vicious doing violent things. But, in a larger context, we've all experienced the impact derivative bankers doing what they wanted to do just to make a little more money.

Crowley, like few others at that time, experimented with drugs, but I think even he'd agree it didn't work out too well. David Crosby said, "It was fine until the bad drugs, like heroin and cocaine, hit." Tweaking the hype machine for sales can be great, but, if the record company is lucky, you'll live up to the hype.

Could a "deal with the devil" simply mean catering to the lowest common denominator or fad instead of being uplifting? "Sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll" sounds good when your 16, but life gets more complicated over time. Soon, you realize the emptiness of this philosophy. Thus, many ubiquitous artists are soon forgotten.

Artists that simply trade on their looks go out of style or, sadly, get old.

Certainly, some artists have lived hellish and dangerous lives thinking that it would somehow inspire or inform their writing or guitar playing. However, were they really better than when they sobered up? Other than living in such a way is terrible, what wisdom did these artists gain? As Paul Simon once sang, "I've paid all the dues to want to pay." Some point to coincidences saying trades have been made. Only time will tell.

Have you ever considered some of this is simply misdirection? The real truth is learning a craft like music is hard work on many levels like any job. (One reason people want their freaking royalties.) If you can get inside other musicians heads, the critics, and the public, and convince them you have found "the secret" along with a "special" guitar to play it on, it becomes a powerful manipulation. For one thing, your product can be regarded as unique and irreplaceable.

In the end, it is about the song not the manipulations. Oddly, authoritarian Joe "The Bank Robber" Stalin said it best, "Give the people a song they can sing from the heart and one they can dance to and they will be happy."
You have "two roads to choose", so why not pick the one that actually leads somewhere?

A while back, I had a feature on hypno bimbos. But, I'd like to take a more series slant on this topic by discussing other aspects of manipulation.

Years ago, Jeff and I would sit in study hall and examine print advertising for hidden sexual signals. At the time, the images hidden were pretty subtle and usually centered on sex. The idea being if you drank this liquor you'd get more sex. The technique of associating sex with a product is a proven technique to promote sales.

These days, things don't have to be suggested or hidden, because they are in the open.

Also, it was pretty evident to us that one problem the band Courier was going to was being different. Not a lot of "sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll" assertions or leftist manifestos.

I pointed out in a college class the "only band that matters", the Clash, was on CBS (now Sony) Records and played Fender guitars owned by, at that time, by CBS. So, exactly how revolutionary were the Clash, LOL? In deed, we thought much of it was posturing and, along with light shows, often an intended distraction away from the music. As Tony and I discussed many times, we didn't need any light shows, mother ships, and costumes.

Looking back, I'm a bit nostalgic for fun 70's shows, but it was also a simpler and more amusing time. Now, there seems to be a coordinated effort to package both the stars and the music in an artificial and provocative way. I think companies want to have world wide standard consumer tastes (and laws) to to increase their profits. Some wonder if all the young people are sexed up and stoned if they will be distracted from other things like their loss in their standard of living. I'm also quite concerned an effort is being made to mainstream pedophilia by sexualizing young entertainers and looking the other way on other abuses.

I heard a rumor years ago about an actress who wouldn't "come out of her role" while making a movie and that she might have been hypnotised to be that person during the length of filming. I can't say if that is true, but I've heard more rumors, heard plausible admissions, and seen clips that indicate at least a few of the music stars are playing with hypnosis to allow them project a certain persona on stage, to "sex up" fans, and encourage record sales.

It was odd that it was on a political site commenting on "slut culture", but one reader opined that women, with the help of the media, women were gaining control over men and this could weaken the whole culture. He wondered if it was a conspiracy.

Recently, I had a conversation with several dominate women concerning a wedding. I've read several times that societies become increasingly complex over time despite occasional "back to basics" movements. It seems cultures like to introduce new aspects to life to maintain societal interest. I think cuckolding is the latest change for four percent of the US population.

For sure, women increasingly assert themselves in academia and the boardroom, so why not the bedroom? The History cable channel is working on a documentary on JFK. Some experts say they are concerned it will be loaded with sexual adventures. I suspect they might also be concerned JFK won't be shown as a perfect progressive icon and more as a politically mainstream...and flawed person.

I used to work with a fellow who would obsess over the Kennedy assassination. He had all kinds of ideas, but for some reason he thought only one entity could perform and cover up the act. The idea that there could be several players never occurred to him.

There are some FBI files that indicate organized crime took credit for assassination in the 70's. Some experts say these files indicate the mob faked Oswald into helping by representing themselves as Cubans when they were likely Corsican hit men. I've often wondered if they were two other cons. Convince "umbrella man" to conduct his old English protest so, unknown to him, the shooters would have shared signal, and, if you believe the rumors, give Zapruder a camera and suggest he photograph the motorcade so you'll have historic proof and guarantee he will be out of his office that day. As I recall, Zapruder's office was in the Dal-Tex building.

Ever notice none of the recreations to re-create the shooting were from the Dal-Tex building? Yeah, they even tried the manhole covers, but never the Dal-Tex building.

As for the cover up, what about the mob adapting the plan to cover up their role in a possible assassination of Castro? How could Robert Kennedy publicly complain about it?

Partly due to having a ripped kick seam, I entertained a whole room full of people during a discussion of the film Boys Don't Cry. Interestingly, none of my "friends" mentioned my problem at the time though one did say something while I was in the middle of the street walking to my car. I've never fully lived this down of course.

I have a friend who took a dress to get it altered. Between the kick seem and the length, her ass was on display for a long time before it was pointed out.

By Request: My Old Letter to SFPD On Zodiac Killer

Dear Sir:

I recently came across an obscure open case called the Moonlight Murders. An unknown “Phantom Killer” in Texas and Arkansas carried out these assaults. I noticed some similarities in the descriptions of the crime scenes of these killings and those of the Zodiac Killer.

Since the Moonlight Murders involved slightly younger women and were not as well planned and executed as the Zodiac Murders, this led me to wonder if these were the acts of a troubled young man possibly just out of high school.

Maybe a school official or another adult on the scene, realizing the young man was upset, but not realizing he was a murderer, recommended the young man join the service. This type of guidance is common as the military is seen as place young men can channel emotions into skills in a disciplined environment.

After completing basic training or a tour, the Moonlight Murder came home to Texas. The assailant could have become angry his personal changes did not help him with women. The girls he desired did not respect the prestige and authority he felt earned in the service. Consequently, his anger grew and more crimes were committed.

The police found out a military style watch at one of the crime scenes in Texas and several Zodiac crime scenes. It might be possible to trace the points of manufacture and sales of the watch.

With nothing left for him where he grew up, he reported and was possibly shipped overseas.

My brother, who served in the army during the Vietnam War, told me “all the guys just wanted to get out (of the service) and go to San Francisco to find all these girls with flowers in their hair.” Let’s assume the assailant thought the same way and left the service to start a new life in the Bay City.

However, San Francisco in 1960s was wild and the man in question might not have liked the undisciplined “do your own thing” world of the hippies. Worse, he might not have got the ‘welcome home’ he though he deserved during the Vietnam era.

Therefore, frustrations similar to his days of youth are rekindled perhaps fired by paranoid narcissistic disorder. The difference this time is the assailant is an older; more disciplined person possibly with military training in procedure, weapons, and, possibly, military codes and ciphers. Thus, the Zodiac Killer is born.

However, I think there is another possibility. Maybe the assailant was a person who dreamed of being a code breaker, a member of the Special Forces, a police officer, or something perceived as more exciting and more worthy of self-delusions. A person born on 22 April under the Astrological sign of Taurus is considered by some to be a person of a “special gift” who has the capacity to “hypnotize others” with his personality.

Zodiac has a variety of interests and a propensity towards unusual phrases and spelling. I think this could be an indication of a person who likes to read on these subjects and others a great deal. I think it would be worth checking public and college libraries in the area to find incidences of key suspects checking out books. I think these books should be searched for key melodramas phrases used by the assailant such as “By File, By Gun, By Knife, By Rope.” Is it possible victims used these same libraries and checked out books at about the same time?

Along the lines of usually spelling and rumors the one suspect had sex toys in his possession, is the possibility the assailant was into sexual dominance and submission role-playing. Beyond the obvious sadistic nature of his crimes, these types of players tend to use certain abbreviations such as “D/s” for dominance and submission or capitalize all references to the “master” while putting references to everyone else in lower case despite rules of grammar.

After a number of years, the Zodiac Killer “disappears” leaving a greater mystery.

However, if my timetable is correct, the Zodiac Killer could be as old as 54 when the trail ends. Not only are there changes in the minds and bodies of these types of killers that can cause them to lose interest, but it is entirely possible the Zodiac Killer could have died from a heart attack or other natural causes at age 54.

I also think it is possible someone, possibly with an artistic background, wanted to keep the idea of the Zodiac Killer alive and figured out how to mimic his odd style of communications with transparencies or other devices. In addition, perhaps even more so than the actual assailant, hastily addressed the envelops at the last minute.

I realize my ideas are unusual, but I decided to send it to you in the odd chance it might help.

On Public Recognition for Synth Pioneer Bob Moog

I thought you might be interested to know I sent a package, including the DVD documentary on Bob Moog (as an "Innovator" and Clarance "Gatemouth" Brown as a RRHF "Influence"), to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (RRHF) as they have categories beyond the rock artists themselves.

The RRHF was impressed with my package, but I got the impression "people in New York" take care of the nominating process. It sounded like there was not even a person identified to them which they could forward my package. I've heard the editor of Rolling Stone has become more involved over the years as others have dropped out.

Anyway, I thought you might find it interesting that somebody gave it shot. I strongly think awards mean more if they are given while the person is still alive!

Normally, I don't share this story, but I wanted to talk about John Lennon's death.

I attended a large high school in the mid-west. When I was in high school, I used to write my name of the inside pages of my books to mark them. Once, when asked about it, I pointed out I didn't have to use my name, I could write anything different. So, at that moment I wrote several titles of Beatle songs instead inside of the book.

The book? The Cather in the Rye.

The year? 1980.

During my senior year, I got sick and was off a number of weeks. During this time, I did a lot of thinking. It was increasingly obvious that with Jeff and I going away to separate colleges and Mike and Tony attending locally, the band and my friendships were likely in trouble. In the fall, I wrote a song about this problem called I'm Loosing You.

Someone told me a station would be playing the new John Lennon album, Double Fantasy, late that night and he offered to tape it for me as I had to sleep. With the exception of some of the chords and a few lyrics, the record contained a similar song also called I'm Loosing You. One of my dorm mates thought it was "good" I wrote a song like Lennon's. But, I explained no one would believe the coincidence I wrote a song similar to John Lennon's and the world didn't need two such similar songs.

Lennon seemed uneasy about the record and what might happen next despite the great popular will surrounding him and the confidence of producer Jack Douglas.

While away at college, I started having a series of dreams. Not about the album covers on the dorm walls, college sex, exams, or my drunken professors, but of being shot while walking into a large old near by building.

On December 8, 1980, I was listening to a popular local FM station when they announced John Lennon had been shot. Mark David Chapman, who had asked for Lennon to autograph an album earlier in the evening, who was holding a copy of The Cather in the Rye, and thought John Lennon was a fake for living far different than his imagery, had shot John Lennon dead.

At the time, Chapman seemed to want to be the person who would stop or reverse what he saw as the increasingly cynical Lennon. Perhaps, in the mind of a crazy person, he would somehow replace John Lennon as someone more authentic. Later, Chapman would say it was like he was possessed.

I had no more dreams of being shot.

When I returned to the dorm, the halls were filled with the sounds of Lennon's music. I wanted no part of it suggesting they should allow him a moment.

Mom later bought me a copy of People magazine with Lennon on the cover. Mom told several people, "It was like Chapman shot (me) too."

Playboy ran an interview with John Lennon where he frequently joked about readers bypassing him for "page 196." As I recall, 196 is one of the pages I marked in my copy of Cather in the Rye.

On McCartney, my memory is he got mad in the studio one night and raced off on a motor bike similar to one in HELP! and hit a car. This does not necessarily kill a person, but it tends to mess up their bits. Eventually, if all goes well, it can lead to band humor...and myth making and record sales.

By the way, John and Yoko were almost killed in a car accident later.

Jim Morrison though the government was out to get them all. This is why he went to France. Well, if they were out to get them, then it would be while they were doing the most dangerous thing they regularly enjoyed as it makes for a more believable story.

Fender Guitars...Made in Japan?

Yes, there was a time when the best Strats were made in Japan (MIJ). My 1962 reissue (62RI) was blue, before it turned purple. It has two different types of body wood for richer tone, SRV pickups with a reverse wound middle, a five way switch, and, later, a DeTemple mystery metal tremolo block. Dealer said it was MIJ Custom Shop, but I don't know if there was ever such a thing. Regardless, it can go from surf to jazz to Van Halen without active tone controls.

After being worth about what I paid for it, it has suddenly doubled in value.

Seth Myers was the assistant coach on a slightly better than mid major college basketball team. His coach, well known to all of you, suggested he go on vacation to see his relatives. While visiting the east coast, the coach advised he try and find out if a frustrated freshman, who was warming the bench for a big time school, might be interested in transferring.

After a series of "James Bond" like meetings in Georgetown, Myers got the deal done. Text messages are so handy.

With time to spare, Seth decided to serve his other interests and slide into a well known fetish boutique which happened to be down the street.

Most such establishments are quite disappointing, but not this one. It was clean, well lit, and fully stocked. Best of all, the help looked like classic text book dominatrices being tall, beautiful, and black leather clad.

Upon his arrival, the black goddess announced she was going to a late lunch. The other encouraged Seth to try anything he wanted.

"Come on; be a bit adventurous," She said.

Chuck Taylor and Rock'n'Roll

On the Guardian's web site, there was an article marvelling over how many musicians wore Converse Chuck Taylor's. Locally, we called these sneakers All Stars and not that many could afford them back in the day. The writer said Nike owns Converse now. The article left out these shoes give grip on wet stages and offer some electrical shock protection.

Stages are safer these days and I'm glad as one header is enough for me!

Years ago, my Chuckies got stolen in gym class, so I went to Addias and Nike, because they were less well known in our area and cheaper.

I was also way ahead of the curve on wearing warm up jackets to school. Everyone would say, "That's a great idea; why didn't I think of that?"

I must confess I did get tragically hip in the 80s between the movies Flashdance and Purple Rain. However, what else was going on at that time? I still like those little ZZ Top socks, because I have legs and know how to use them...

First Guitar Story By Request

Like most anyone in my age group, it was the Beatles that got me started on guitar. Mom, however, was less impressed partly due to our financial situation.

Eventually, I got a $32 Stella by Harmony in a natural finish. Over the years, I've noticed most whites had the Sear's Silvertone "cowboy" version of this guitar.

My first guitar teacher was a blonde folkie who had a Martin with pickups and a T-bird. As I recall, she appeared some with the New Christie Mistrals.

I took lessons off and on with her for a number of years and a local teaching legend.

Over time, I got frustrated with my 3/4 size instrument with its heavy gage strings. Every once and a while I would buy strings at a store called Band Box. The salesman let me play a Telecaster and suggested I bring the guitar in as it probably needed a whole set of strings. "If one's worn out, its probably time to replace them all." "I've never wore out the bottom strings," I said. I added, "But, the bridge is worn out." The salesman was skeptical, but I'd had the guitar five years at this point.

Later, I rode my blue Huffy Wheel 20# bike down to the store with the Stella tied to the sissy bar. He didn't have a new wood bridge to replace my ebonized maple one, but he had an adjustable black and white plastic one. This bridge didn't sound as good, but I found with this bridge and Martin Silk'n'Steel strings the guitar shedded its old time boxy sound and gave me decent intonation up to the fifth fret.

Later, I started playing again in a bluesier style to support our comedy troupe on going parody of radio. In addition to being rusty, it was apparent the tuners were worn out so I put on a set of used Gibson's.

As it turned out, I played this instrument for ten years until I got a new one. The next year I finally got an electric guitar which the family wasn't too happy about either. It took another year to get an amp. Until then, I used one of the original Panasonic boom boxes as an amp or plugged my guitar into the stereo.

Modulus Graphite Flea (Funk Bass) #302

Yes, I own Inca silver Flea number 302.

Modulus Graphite instruments are popular here due to the weather and their tonal flexibility. I've played several models, but I'd never quite found the right one.

I first spotted my Flea one summer at Mars Music in Cincinnati. It was somewhat similar in design to a Music Man model popular in our area. To me, the controls were easier to use and more effective than the Music Man's. Also, I really liked playing it, but it was very expensive.

And, there was a chance I might get laid off from work.

Later, when I heard Mars Music was going out of business, I went down there hoping it would still be available. It was, but it was very shop worn and a knob was missing. When I say it was shop worn, it resembled some of the distressed instruments being sold by Fender.

Somebody told me, "You don't want that one, because somebody told me it fell off the wall."

I made Mars Music an offer that I figured was about $100 more than they paid for it. However, the lawyer representing the court wouldn't allow me to buy it for that amount. He explained their plan was to mark down each item a percentage per week until "even the light fixtures are sold." The salesman pleaded with him; then apologized to me, and I left.

Work and weather permitting, I drove 200 miles every few weeks to see it. Later, I saw a kid with it in line. I gave up, bought some great speakers for $60, and went to eat at Dave and Buster's next door.

The Saturday after Thanksgiving, the day before Mars closed, I went to check things out. I'm not sure why. Sure enough, they had a few five string Modulus basses among the tons of cheap third world nylon string guitars.

The one salesman I knew saw me and said, "I was hoping you'd come back."

"The bass was sold," I said.

"Yes, a kid bought it with a blank check from his parents who made him bring it back as they didn't think it was worth what he paid for it, because it was damaged."

I bought it for less than I'd offered weeks before.

Is this not one of the great rock'n'roll stories of all time?

Top Ten Reasons You Don't Sound Like Recording Artists

1. Is your guitar or bass decent, in tune, and properly set up using quality medium strings?
2. Do you have a decent amplifier and cable and a properly rated clean power supply?
3. Have you focused too much on stage presence and vibe over craft?
4. Have you focused too much on music theory over originality, passion, and urgency?
5. Do you listen to each other while you play?
6. Do you listen to the meaning of the song and search for an appropriate original arrangement?
7. Is your recording medium any good like HD, digital stream, or round reel?
8. Do you understand the delicate art of compression?
9. Are you trying to fix problems with balance or EQ in the mix or during mastering?

And number 10. You do realize, beyond of the obvious studio tricks, that a few "hit" songs are slowed down and quite a few are sped up? There can be improvements fidelity and psycho-acoustics when songs are sped up. Plus, the players sound better and singers voices more closely match that of teenage girl record buying public.

The right mixture of compression, EQ, and speed variation used to be called "sweeting" the recording.

Fiction: Charlie Cummings at Twilight

Nothing ever happens to Charlie Cummings. Well, nothing good. Where Charlie works, there is no opportunity for advancement. At the places Charlie hangs out, there are no women his age to talk to. When he looks at new cars, they aren't fun to drive. When he watches TV, there's nothing on he wants to watch.

This is why we find Charlie battling traffic on Main street at dusk on rush hour. He's on his way to talk to his psychologist. Like two weeks ago, the problem is a Toyota is burning itself to the ground. Charlie fumes about today's high pressure fuel pumps and over excited drivers.

Not wishing to be late again, Charlie decides to turn around in the parking lot of an orthodontist who never seems to be open. As he drives his car around the back of the building, he spots a young blonde woman hovering in front of the headlights of her Taurus. She's peeing.

Not knowing the protocols, Charlie waves at her. Her friends cry out in laughter. The car following Charlie honks.

Charlie thinks to himself this is either the most embarrassing moment of the girls life or maybe the greatest. He figures she'll never forget it. He also wonders how the hell much she had to drink.

On the way home later, Charlie stops at a bistro for a bite to eat.

After an acceptable meal, Charlie is leaving when he spots an unusual couple. The man is average in most every way, but the woman is much younger and stunningly tall and thin. Charlie wonders if this is what a "size zero" looks like. Her dress is tight and brown and it matches her flowing hair. As he passes them, Charlie notices she's wearing a anklet. The results of the poll varied significantly by career field. In “serious” professions, such as accountancy, few took this decision. However, the percentage jumped dramatically to well over twenty percent among what might be called entertainment oriented professions. While the numbers of respondents were difficult to control by profession the self-reported survey, the average willingness to use sex was 7.4%.

I heard a recent report on the radio saying one third of woman would consider using sex for career advancement, but I couldn't find the report on the web to see if the media reported the study correctly or if the study was at all valid. The media generally does a poor job using statistics or reporting scientific studies.

Interestingly, none of the women in my study raised the issue of whether this activity would harm their relationship.
